100x918 (SLUG-5) COAST GUARD CUTTER IN ICE
HARD SMATHING UP ICE-JAMMED PENOBSCOT.
BANGOR, Me. -- Smart Coast Guard steamer Ossipee breaking the ice jam on the Penobscot River, about five miles below here, yesterday. Capt. James L. Ahearn has been making good progress through ice varying from 10 to 14 inches thick. The hardest part of his job was smashing the frozen surface in the narrows. Here the banks of the river rise in almost perpendicular cliffs, shutting off the sun and also sheltering the ice from the wind. In Bangor there is considerable melting snow at midday, but every night the temperature falls below freezing.
